John Carew was an autograph from becoming an Albion player. Still can't believe the board had the cheek to only offer Blues £100,000 for Trevor Francis.

He went to Saints for £13m so chances are we either couldn’t afford him or chose to use the money elsewhere...

Just checked - we signed Evans for half that fee that summer so I imagine we switched targets.

It was documented somewhere by one of our scouts VVD was offered to TP when he was at Celtic, whether we couldn't afford him or his inability to "hoof it" 75 yards put paid to the deal who knows

I do recall there being a bit of a saga around VVD and Celtic holding out for huge money. He went on deadline day for figures lower than what Celtic were initially holding out for.

My best guess would be that heard the fee they wanted and decided to look elsewhere. We signed Evans and Chester that summer.
