What is this absolute rubbish that is being reported about possibly allowing us a 5 day break from restrictions over Christmas in exchange for another month in lockdown?

Why is it ok to party with relatives just because some jumped up boffin tells us we can because it is Christmas yet doing such a thing on any other day is not allowed. According to the rules I can't visit anyone else in their house whilst under lockdown presumably to prevent the spread of the virus. Yet I will be able to do exactly that at Christmas potentially infecting members of my family as a way of thanking them for their hospitality.

I could be asymptomatic anytime and pass on the virus according to the experts which is why we must obey all these rules and regulations and yet for 5 days all that will be thrown out of the window. Let the kids who have been at school roll up at Grandma's, the returning University students will be delighted to see Grandad again after so long away and we can all have a great big party. Just as long as we then lock ourselves down again in January.

How does this make any sense? We are either following scientific evidence or we are not - these proposals are absolute bobbins.

We have been following the science when it suits and ignoring it when it’s going to really politically bite the powers that be in the arse.
The only decisions that can be made are political decisions.

If we'd have "followed the science" we'd have been in total lockdown since February.

The simple solution for Christmas is for people to make their own decisions based on their own perception of risk. In particular, it's not up to the State to tell us when and where we can meet our families. They can fuck right off.

I've spoken to two elderly relatives today who've been pretty much housebound for 9 months. They'd both choose to spend Christmas with their families, and it's none of my, your or anyone else's business whether they do.
government cant win on this one.

they will aim to lift restrictions a bit but hope that people do what they think is safe.

outside of the usual suspects i cant see many people inviting huge amounts of people into their home.

im not expecting pubs to reopen this year at all as an offset to this.

Correct.

Absolutely correct.
Reading between the li(n)es, this is probably a veiled admission that if people are going to break the rules anyway, it may as well go unpunished. People will, and it avoids a silly amount of bad press.

It's not the safest answer but I can't see it as anything other than welcome news; especially as it could well be the last time a number of families spend time together over what could still turn out to be a grave winter.

That's fine as long as these people don't expect sympathy and care should they disregard whatever guidelines we've been given and catch it, God forbid.

If something isn't safe to do on the 24th or the 26th December, it sure as shit isn't right doing it on the 25th. I notice, no special dispensation was made at Easter or for Eid... Out of principle I think the Mrs and I will be stopping home by ourselves and hitting the plonk early.
Just shows that people just can not be trusted to do the right thing.

I'm having my dad over who is in our bubble and that's it not even seeing my son and daughter in law.... I really don't see the problem making sacrifices.

My dad was prepared not to come over as he doesn't want to be in lockdown any longer.

Fucking heck, that's twice in a couple of weeks I've agreed with every word of one of Liq's posts.
I'm quite sensible when I'm not trying to play people up.
