I've wasted my lunch-break watching the highlights. Bartley and Johnstone are being cut way too much slack IMO. In the old days of good defending (Foster/McAuley/Olsson, Godden/Wile /Robertson etc), if one player slipped up, his mates would anticipate and be covering. Not only was Bartley out of position, he showed no sign of urgency in getting back to cover (or is he really that slow?) - as if he just assumed Hegazi would clear it. And Johnstone's feeble effort at stopping the shot was inexcusable. Getting two hands to the ball and failing to get it past the post was very poor indeed.
As I've posted before, it isn't about the individuals (much as I think Bartley is over-rated), it's about coaching and character. Hegazi and Bartley would have had the bollocking of their lives from some coached (Megson, Pulis, maybe Hodgson, certainly Buckley or Gould). Does this happen nowadays?
I thought the same about Bartley at the time.
I said to my son straight away SJ should have saved that.
Although I thought Hegazi should've done far better. There was a few culpable.
From Livermore making a poor pass, to Bartley not covering better and Johnstone's effort at trying to save it.
It was all a bit shit.

In a nutshell
Bloke sat by me straight away blamed Townsend. Personally thought he wasn`t the only one to be singled out. On the way out I said to the lad, what I wouldn`t give for Robertson / Bennett. He said, rightly , I suppose, the game has changed etc. I would still find a place for one of those.
Agree, the striker shouldn't be having that much space even if we were caught out like that. I actually thought Johnstone had saved it and was stunned to see it end up in the net.
Hegazi should have hit row z all the rest would have been irrelivent the poor pass in the beginning was school boy stuff .
Hate to say it but the team hasn’t looked as solid since Hegazi returned.

You slated three individuals in the first paragraph.
