any suggestions of things to do.  we're off there for three days next week and I can't just spend all of them in the pub!!!!

Defo. Great place that. A last stop afore ye olde explorers buggered off on the ocean waves.

And go to Vilamoura. Full of nice little boats...
If you're hiring a car while your there a trip inland to the Guadiana Valley Natural Park (Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana) is well worthwhile; it's about one and a half hours drive from Faro, mostly on decent roads by the standards of southern Portugal.

Been to the Algarve a few times, but never at this time of year. Definitely hire a car, but take care as I think I read somewhere that The Algarve has a high rate of car accidents!
Faro itself is worth a look around, so is Vilamoura,Lagos, Portimao, Carvoeiro and Cape St Vincent, 
Try the sardines- delicious.
