You'll be glad to know - Shabby Russian - 04-06-2020

that the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny are essential workers - so says NZ's PM Jacinda Ardern. Who in a video message aimed at children, went on to warn that they may not get to every child, because it is such a difficult time.

Whilst many will see this as frivolous (it is) and a waste of time (it most certainly is not), I think it is important for politicians to take on board how strange and scary this situation could be for children.

As a family we are lucky, we have a garden and decent walks available locally that we can start from our front door, but even still my 9 year old daughter doesn't understand fully why we can't go to the beach, softplay area cinema etc , and the eldest (17) is mightily pissed off because she can't see her boyfriend. The middle one always self isolates so I am not sure she has noticed any change.

I can't imagine what it would be like if you have children and no outdoor space for them to play in and get exercise, and more importantly what it would be like for the children.

So it makes a refreshing change for a politician to communicate directly to children. I'm not sure enough do.

I think it's very sad indeed how very rarely political leaders talk to children, even about events which have a big impact upon them.

One of the best examples of this was Reagan's speech after the Challenger disaster.
