Where and why are they produced? I used to theorise that there was a huge warehouse somewhere with halves for every team and they were quickly sewn together for each match.

But a lot of them have the match dates on them, meaning that they're being produced specifically for matches. I've seen them being sold on the Brummie Road at bog standard league matches against the likes of Southampton. Who's buying them? Why are they buying them? Who is producing them? The people selling them must be turning a profit on them otherwise they wouldn't bother.

We have a phrase at home now, an "Arfanarfer". If someone looks like a prize tool and a potential purchaser of said monstrosity he gets pointed out and labelled as such.
