Question: Why do British people side with either Israel or Palestine? Aren't they both fighting a long-standing war where they're both in the fucking wrong?!

Why do Celtic fans have Palestinian flags and Rangers fans Israeli flags? Because people are stupid. There's your answer.

Is that right? As some chap on ere used to say Wow! I suppose I'm surprised that I'm surprised about anything these days

I suspect Rangers and Celtic fans just pick sides in any divide and use it as an excuse to fight.

Don’t get them started on Oasis v Blur.

Loads of links between Celtic - Irish Nationalism - and other fights against oppression. Catalunya, Palestine, Civil Rights in America etc etc.

No idea r.e. Rangers and the Israeli flag, I doubt they do either.

If it is indeed historical links that inspire the flag waving (which i sincerely doubt), you could easily highlight the role the British Government had in establishing the state of Israel i.e. ties with the Yishuv in British Palestine after WWI, the signing of the Balfour Declaration and so on . . .

Probably right about the Israel thing. It is historical - ever been down the Falls Road? Murals everywhere linked to various struggles. It runs far deeper than what will piss off the Unionists.
