Problem with Charlie is pace

That’s why we have all the others.

Fair point.

Kane isn’t that quick but has players around him that are very quick

Another thing to consider is that a player who has never relied on pace will continue to have an impact in his twilight years.  Contrast Austin to Gayle, whose game relies on speed.  I'd sooner had a 31/2-year-old Austin than a 31/2-year-old Gayle.

Austin will never outpace defenders or dribble past 2 or 3 of em but create chances for him in the box and he will be lethal.

He is a target. J Rod and Gayle, despite the goals, weren’t.

We have so much more pace and creativity amongst the squad this season that we just needed a finisher and that’s what Austin is.

Exactly this

Confirmed from the club, deal was agreed Gayle said no, wanted a permanent deal for his family, as much as he loved the Albion

Chances are will be on the market come January

Would have loved him here this season again. Not sure about £15million for getting promoted though for a player who struggles at PL level.

Anyway I'm happy with Austin. I reckon he's gonna be a real favourite here.

Gayle being injured through pre-season is a worry for someone who relies on explosive pace. Rarely bodes well for an injury free season.

For £20m I'd want someone with better Prem prospects or age on his side like Maupay, much as I'd have been dancing for joy if Gayle had come.

What did Hal Robson Kanu say?
I hope he also had some profuse apologies for getting sent off at Derby.

Exactly this.

The club did everything they could to entice Gayle - including a pretty ludicrous package which Newcastle must have been pinching themselves over... but it didn’t work for him, and he’s very much in the driving seat.

Injuries permitting, we have enough to get to January, let’s revisit it then.
